Beaches Barbados: Friend or Foe?

Sandals has plans to bring a Beaches Resort to Barbados but residents have concerns about public beach access, boat access, and local retail.

In a nutshell:  The new build will be at Heywoods Beach, Speightstown (also known as Little Bristol) at the site of the old Almond Beach Resort on the West Coast of Barbados. There are some that oppose this all-inclusive resort, worried that they’ll lose public beach access, but Sandals has commented that they intend to keep the beach public.

Sandals has held several town hall meetings regarding the $800M project.  It’s estimated that this project could bring in $150M per year and approximately 2000 jobs to the weakened economy. It’s still too soon to know all of the plans as construction is due to begin soon with a proposed 2020 open date.  Other residents, a Speightstown Pub owner and a Grocer, believe it will be good for the area’s economy.

Here’s the thing about all-inclusive resorts…. While we know that they offer everything you need from meals, to drinks, to activities, to shops and more; BUT many guests enjoy leaving the resort to shop, explore, ride a zipline, whatever….and after all, Barbados is the Birthplace of Rum!  With an influx of visitors comes revenue and this could be an opportunity that’s been a long time coming for this area.  This is the time to prepare for the rise in visitors.
