There’s a new sheriff in town! Well…kind of.
There’s a new municipal president (mayor), Laura Beristain, in Playa del Carmen and the goal is a return to peace.
In addition, the police are working to strengthen ties with the community by using pedestrian and motorized patrols in urban and tourist areas to reduce crimes. They’re also working with local businesses, creating action plans, and a surveillance plan.
“There will be no truce to fight crime. It will be a head-on fight” according to Commander Martín Estrada Sánchez from Public Safety and Transit.
With that said…
We’ve seen the advisories and reports and the inaccuracies in some of the news of previously reported crimes that failed to clarify that they were not in the tourist areas, including Playa del Carmen, for example. This is a positive for the entire municipality and its citizens, as any effort to reduce crime and response time helps tourism, however, just like anywhere else in the world, everyone needs to use common sense about their surroundings.
Did you know?
- Solidaridad is home to one of the largest tourist attractions, the Maya archaeological site of Xcaret.
- Playa del Carmen is in the Riviera Maya.
- The Riviera Maya is also called the Mayan Riviera. It runs from just south of Cancun, until Tulum, and the entrance of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere.
